Fresh Smell May Be Hazardous to HealthUSA Today; July 24, 2008; Page 3AA study has found the fumes of top-selling air fresheners and laundry products contain dozens of chemicals, some of them toxic or hazardous, The Seattle Times reported (seattletimes.com). None of the chemicals was listed on product labels, according to the newspaper. Study author Anne Steinemann told the Times she had heard complaints for years from people who said air fresheners and other household products made them dizzy, short of breath or caused headaches, seizures or asthma attacks. The newspaper reported the products gave off nearly 100 “volatile organic compounds,” including likely carcinogens. The newspaper noted that industry-funded studies have generally reported few health effects. – Lisa Tanger
