Lavender is the most versatile of all essential oils and can be added to any
other essential oil or essential oil “blend”.
Literally, and entire book had
been written on this one oil, Aroma: Lavender published by Alchemical
Garden. Today, Lavender is one of the few essential oils to still be listed in
the British Pharmacopoeia.
Studies in the past have unambiguously demonstrated that Lavender has many
diverse essential oil components that are anti-inflammatory, anti-viral,
anticonvulsant, anti-tumoral, analgesic, antiseptic, and anti-depressant as a
natural sedative. A study most relevant for aromatherapy was published in
1987, in the German language, by R. Deininger and A. Lembke. It was presented
again in 1995 in San Francisco and can be found, in the English language, in the
Proceedings of the 1st
Wholistic Aromatherapy Conference, San
Francisco (1995).
Lavender is
widely known for its treatment of burns. This is not for treating extensive
or deep burns, but a response for everyday first and second-degree burns
occurring in the home. It is also used to sooth a sun-burned skin, especially
on small children. It is excellent to place on surgical scare, the sooner the
better to reduce scarring
scarring (Helichrysum would be an excellent first choice!).
Another complementary oil for treating burns is Melaleuca alternifolia or
the blended oil of Melrose. Combing lavender with the Melaleuca is a good idea
because it creates an wonderful synergistic effect.
Lavender
is also useful when the necessity to be calm and relaxed prevails.
Lavender contains chemical components of sedative
properties. This makes it great to use at bedtime to promote a restful
sleep. This oil, along with “Peace and Calming” makes for a wonderful natural
remedy for restless-leg syndrome. Our therapeutic-grade Lavandula
angustifolia is an approved dietary supplement, so adding one drop of our
lavender to a cup of Chamomile tea creates a wonderful sleep aid. In addition,
5-drops of Lavandula angustifloia and a teaspoon of V-6 Mixing Oil (or
any vegetable oil, or coconut oil is wonderful) for a local massage provides
well-being and relaxation. If time does not allow for a full body massage, do
your own neck and shoulders!
Lavender plays a complementary role for
respiratory problems. When combined with other infection fighting oils it can
aid in the relief of cough spasms, chest pain or wheezing. Try adding it to
Melaleuca alternifolia or Ravensara - - - or tweaking Lavender into our
blended oils of R.C. or Raven. Lavender with the Eucalyptus oils quickly opens
up sinus passages and helps tremendously during hay-fever season.
Lavender also plays another complementary role for
inflammation problems. Try adding lavender to peppermint oil and massaging it
into painful joints and muscles. Adding one drop of lavender and one drop of
ginger to a cup of tea may also be helpful. A lavender, clove and wintergreen
body massage or on painful body areas can be very effective.
Lavender is an
excellent First Aid or travel companion because it is so versatile and a natural
antiseptic.
Use it to cleanse cuts and wounds. It is ideal for daily skin and hair care.
Lavender has positive effects on the Cardiovascular System, Muscles and Bones
and the Nervous System. It is safe for use on small children and animals.
